Azerbaijan faces prospect of COVID doctor shortage
bne IntelliNews- June 29, 2020 (アゼルバイジャン)

The Azerbaijani authorities have voiced concerns over the country's ability to deal with the rising number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, raising the prospects of a shortage of doctors. During a recent visit to open a new modular hospital in city of Ganja, President Ilham Aliyev made an unprecedented warning that the country may not have enough doctors to treat patients if the virus continues to spread at the current rate.

US facing a growing physician shortage and COVID-19 may be making it worse
PhillyVoice.com- JUNE 29, 2020 (米国)

The United States is expected to be down at least 54,100 physicians by 2033, creating increased demand on the health care system, according to a new report. The shortage could soar as high as 139,000.
The analysis*, published last week by the Association of American Medical Colleges, was conducted in 2019 – before the COVID-19 pandemic, which many health experts fear will exacerbate the physician shortage.

US Doctor Shortage Could Hit 139000 By 2033
Forbes-2020/06/26 (米国)

The nation's shortage of doctors will rise to between 54,000 and 139,000 by 2033 as the U.S. population grows and ages, making it even more difficult to fight public health threats like today's spread of the coronavirus strain Covid-19. The latest study* of doctor supply by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), a lobby for medical schools and teaching hospitals, shows coming “shortfalls in both primary and specialty care.”

A decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to protect some 700,000 immigrants known as Dreamers helps future doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers to stay in the country.
Hospitals, doctor groups, academic medical centers and medical schools cheered Thursday’s decision by the Supreme Court to prevent the Trump administration from proceeding with its plan to end the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which many healthcare interests said could exacerbate the U.S. doctor shortage and hurt patient care for thousands of Americans.
There are currently nearly 200 medical student and resident Dreamers, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). And tens of thousands of healthcare workers at hospitals, clinics and other facilities treating hundreds of thousands of patients, medical groups said.

A shortage of cancer doctors could impact efforts to deal with an anticipated surge in new cases in the autumn, research suggests. New figures from The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) reveal how the supply of specialist cancer doctors is continuing to fall behind NHS demand. Patients could have poorer outcomes and less chance of having their cancer cured due to a shortfall of at least 200, leading oncologists have warned..

Doctor who raised concerns over PPE shortage admitted to mental hospital
BBC News-2020/05/20 (英国)

An Indian doctor who was suspended after raising concerns about a shortage of masks is again in the spotlight after officials committed him to a mental hospital. BBC Telugu's V Shankar reports. Dr Sudhakar Rao, an anaesthetist with 20 years of experience, made national headlines over the weekend for the second time in two months.
A series of videos that went viral show him and police facing off on a highway in the southern city of Visakhapatnam, where Dr Rao lives and works. Authorities say he was sent to a mental hospital after.

Some NHS managers have tried to stop doctors speaking publicly about shortages of personal protective equipment, the BBC has been told. WhistleblowersUK said more than 100 healthcare workers had contacted them since the beginning of March, raising concerns about Covid-19 and PPE.
The Department of Health said no one should be prevented from speaking up.
But Newsnight has seen evidence of pressure being applied to doctors to not share concerns they have about PPE.

Coronavirus: doctors call for inquiry into PPE shortages for NHS staff
The Guardian-2020/05/10 (英国)

Doctors are taking legal action to force the UK government to launch an independent inquiry into its failure to provide adequate personal protective equipment for NHS staff and other frontline care workers.
News of the challenge, brought by the Doctors Association UK (DAUK) and the Good Law project, comes as the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said it was withdrawing a model of protective goggles – “Tiger Eye” protectors – from use because they offered insufficient protection.
A pre-action letter sent to the DHSC says an immediate independent inquiry is essential to ensure sufficient PPE can be made available as soon as possible and to ensure healthcare workers are properly equipped for any second or third wave of Covid-19.

In the face of Covid-19, the U.S. needs to change how it deals with mental illness
STAT-2020/05/29 (米国)

Before Covid-19 arrived in the U.S., the country was in the midst of a mental illness crisis. Suicide rates in the United States rose 33% between 1999 and 2017. In 2018, 1.7 million people had an opioid use disorder. Now a deadly virus and the resulting isolation and economic hardship threaten to exacerbate the crisis.
As suicide, opioid use disorder, and other mental health issues were playing out, the country’s capacity to help wasn’t up to the task. When people became ill enough to need hospitalization, there was only one psychiatric bed for every 3,000 Americans. That’s one-tenth of what we had in the 1950s. For people with severe mental illness, it was hard to find inpatient treatment and, for those who did, they were often forced into shorter stays than necessary for quality treatment.

Bipartisan Senate bill would make more green cards available to doctors, nurses
The Hill-2020/05/04 (米国)

A bipartisan Senate bill, set for introduction when the chamber returns, would make it easier for doctors and nurses to obtain green cards.
The Healthcare Workforce Resilience Act, introduced by Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.), would allocate 40,000 unused, previously authorized immigrant visas to doctor and nurses who can work to treat coronavirus patients without increasing immigration numbers.
“The growing shortage of doctors and nurses over the past decade has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis,” Perdue said in a statement. “Fortunately, there are thousands of trained health professionals who want to practice in the United States. This proposal would simply reallocate a limited number of unused visas from prior years for doctors and nurses who are qualified to help in our fight against COVID-19. This shortage is critical and needs immediate attention so that our healthcare facilities are not overwhelmed in this crisis.”

Slashing Red Tape Can Ease The Doctor Shortage
Forbes-2020/04/13 (米国)

There's no shortage of red tape for policymakers to cut to boost the supply of care during the pandemic and beyond. The U.S. doctor shortage preceded COVID-19. But the crisis has exposed its severity. If current trends continue, the United States will be short up to 122,000 physicians by 2032, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. That projected shortfall includes up to 55,000 primary care doctors.

Why The Coronavirus Outbreak Could Make Hawaii's Doctor Shortage Worse
Hawaiipublicradio-2020/04/02 (米国ハワイ州)

The state is scrambling to identify enough medical professionals to care for a potential surge of coronavirus patients in Hawaii. However, some doctors are concerned that the outbreak will further worsen the state's long-standing physician shortage.
Dr. Alistair Bairos, a general surgeon, has been practicing medicine on the Big Island for the past 35 years. Since the coronavirus outbreak, he's been seeing only about a third of the patients he usually does.
“Some doctors have cut back completely on face-to-face encounters,” he said. “The problem is then that the doctors still have practice expenses from which they’re going to get no or very reduced income.”

Coronavirus News: Pre-existing doctor shortages exacerbated by pandemic.

As the coronavirus exhausts medical supplies and stretches thin available medical professionals, the 7 On Your Side Investigates data team analyzed records from the Health Resources and Services Administration tracking doctor shortages around the country.
HRSA compares the number of physicians to the population and considers other factors such as age and poverty levels to determine whether a geographic area has enough doctors to meet the potential need.
Our analysis of that data revealed segments of the Tri-State region was experiencing a shortage of primary care doctors even before COVID-19.
According to HRSA, New York state was short 1,188 doctors and Connecticut 147 doctors. There was no data available from HRSA tracking shortages in New Jersey.

Even before the pandemic, the general public had positive perceptions of medical schools and teaching hospitals. Here's what else they think about academic medicine, the doctor shortage, health equity, holistic review, and what they value in a physician.
The COVID-19 pandemic has wrought enormous changes in health care. It has also demonstrated the heroic dedication of health care teams on the front lines, including at teaching hospitals, and the public has responded by showering them with outright displays of appreciation, online accolades, and even meals delivered to the hospital.
The truth is, the public already had a fairly high opinion of medical schools and teaching hospitals, according to results of the 2019 AAMC Public Opinion Research, a biannual poll of registered voters. “Certainly, the pandemic is demonstrating the value of academic medicine and the critical role that medical schools and teaching hospitals play in our health care system — caring for the most complex and difficult medical cases, providing care for the poor and uninsured, and conducting research to advance medical knowledge and treatment,” says Elisa Siegel, chief communications and marketing officer for the AAMC.

A Perth doctor is proposing a new medical clinic in the south end of town to address the physician shortage. Dr. Taylor Ferrier, during a presentation, via teleconference, to Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, March 31, said that part of the ongoing doctor shortage problem could be traced back to “a spacing shortage,” more specifically, “no place for doctors to practice now, and the demand is still there,” he said. In short, there is “no place to go.”

Foreign doctors want to help fight the coronavirus. But the US health system stands in their way.
Medical licensing requirements have made it difficult for foreign doctors to go where they’re needed.

Vox Apr 28, 2020, 11:40am EDT (米国)

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to rip through the US, hard-hit areas have been facing doctor shortages, placing both patients and overworked health care workers at greater risk.
Thousands of foreign doctors who already have clinical experience and are waiting for a chance to practice medicine in the US could step in to help. But even before the current crisis, the immigration system, coupled with medical licensing requirements, have made it difficult for them to work in the US and go where they’re needed.
Graduates of foreign medical schools face the same certification requirements as any American graduate — they have to pass their medical licensing exams and obtain a highly sought-after spot in a three- to seven-year residency program.
Many foreign students, though, have already completed years of training in their home countries before they seek US certification. That experience has little bearing on their admission into residency programs, where available spots are always fewer than the number of applicants, and graduates of US medical schools are given preference.
In 2020, about 40 percent of foreign medical school graduates didn’t “match” with a residency program, compared to only 6 percent of American graduates. That means thousands of qualified doctors being effectively shut out of practicing medicine in the US. And if they want to try again next year, that comes with a hefty price tag: It can cost thousands of dollars to apply to residency programs.

Fresno County has to give away 100 emergency field hospital beds intended to treat coronavirus patients because the Valley's long-standing shortage of doctors means there aren't enough medical professionals to monitor the patients.
About 250 beds will be delivered to the county after state officials on Wednesday green light its proposed field hospital location for handling coronavirus patients. But due to a lack of physicians, the county plans to give away 50 other beds to an unspecified Northern California county and another 50 to an unspecified southern county, according to EMS coordinator Dan Lynch.

"I just heard a story this morning about a number of physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals becoming ill and infected, which puts them out of the workforce," Harris said in a phone interview at which a public relations person was present. "We certainly had a workforce challenge pre-pandemic, but it's exacerbated by COVID-19 disease."

The Problem with US Health Care Isn't a Shortage of Doctors
Harvard Business Review-2020/03/16 (米国 マサチューセッツ州)

The coronavirus epidemic is increasing demands on health care's frontline, primary care physicians. Even before the outbreak emerged, conventional wisdom held that we're facing a PCP shortage. Quartz this July warned of a “devastating” doctor shortage poised to strike America. Later that month, the Washington Post chimed in with “America to face a shortage of primary care physicians within a decade or so.” Indeed, estimates from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) indicate that the U.S. could face a shortfall of between 21,000 and 55,000 primary care doctors by 2023. Add to this the spikes in demand from Covid-19 and any future epidemics, and the challenge might seem insurmountable.

He scrubs and wipes, then sprays them with Lysol before hanging them up to dry. The items are his personal protective equipment, or PPE -- improvised due to the severe shortage at hospitals across the city -- and he'll likely need to use them at work tomorrow.
As a per diem emergentologist who fills in shifts left empty by the increasing number of doctors calling out sick, Sun has the unique perspective of working in emergency rooms throughout the New York City area. Within the walls of each medical facility, he sees the same desperation.

As California faces a growing shortage of primary care physicians, the Legislature is considering what backers believe could be a partial solution: allowing nurse practitioners who get additional training and certification to work independently. With that additional authority, they could treat patients without a “practice agreement” from a supervising physician outlining what they can do. It also would allow some nurse practitioners to open their own clinics without a doctor overseeing them.

SYRACUSE, NY (WRVO) – State Sen. Joe Griffo (R-Rome) said he has been approached by a number of doctors from the Mohawk Valley to the North Country who say many upstate communities are currently unable to recruit and retain healthcare workers.
“You’re seeing more shortages in many areas, primarily in primary care but also in the specialties too, and that is a concern and will be a challenge,” Griffo said.

My doctor has retired and no one has taken over his practice. Given the current situation regarding physician production and the outflow of doctors due to their retirement age, it's highly unlikely that I'll ever have a family doctor again.

Hawaii Doctor Shortage Persists But More Training Programs Could Help
Hawaii public radio Dec 26, 2019 (Hawaii, USA)

Hawaii is gaining doctors, but not enough to keep up with the patient demand, according to a University of Hawaii report on the state’s continuing physician shortage.
The university report says 152 doctors left the state and 91 retired in 2019.
In addition, 120 doctors decreased their work time. Dr. Kelley Withy, the report's principal investigator, said this could indicate that the physicians are considering retiring.
The doctor population in Hawaii skews older compared to the rest of the country. About half of the doctors in the state are over 55 years old.

There aren't enough doctors in the Canadian city of Cornwall in Ontario. While the city needs medical doctors, the city council approved $45,000 in public funding for a naturopathic clinic, according to the National Post. "If this is really to address a physician shortage, then it is just completely inappropriate and completely ridiculous," said Michelle Cohen, an Ontario family physician.

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - The University of Arizona is fighting a projected doctor shortage by giving its students a huge incentive. The University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine in Tucson and Phoenix will provide free tuition to full-time medical students. They have to practice primary care in disadvantaged Arizona communities for at least two years after completing residency. Students also have to be Arizona residents. The two-year service must be completed within 10 years after graduating from medical school, UArizona said.

Elizabeth Warren's Medicare-for-all plan is a disaster and would lead to an “enormous” doctor shortage, according to FOX News medical correspondent Dr. Marc Siegel. If Warren’s plan came to pass, doctors would be working for the government, which in turn would decide their pay, Dr. Siegel told FOX Business’ Stuart Varney. “The government doctors will be paid up to 40 percent less," he said on Thursday. "Many will leave the profession,”
