U.S. Faces Doctor Shortage Despite Specialist Growth
DEC 30, 2016 @ 08:20 AM Forbes‎ (USA)

Though the number of physicians is on the rise, it's not enough to alleviate a shortage of tens of thousands of doctors over the next decade, new data indicates. The Association of American Medical Colleges, which has a vested interest in seeing more doctors being churned out, has new data to bolster its contention that Congress and the U.S. health system at large aren’t doing enough to supply the nation with physicians as the population ages.

Doctor shortages leave remote communities without proper medical support over festive period: RDAA
ABC Online‎ - Tue Dec 27, 2016 at 7:59am (Australia)

Rural doctor shortages are exacerbated over the Christmas and New Year period when many regional areas can be left without a doctor, sometimes for weeks on end, the Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) says.
The RDAA says decades of work to increase the number of medical professionals in remote locations has failed to deliver real results, and rural and remote medical staff deserve better support.

Herald-Mail Media‎ Dec 30, 2016 (Pemssilvania, USA)

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Health-system administrators in the Tri-State area said physician recruitment is going to be a major issue in the next decade, with a federal agency projecting a shortage of more than 20,000 doctors nationwide by 2020.

"This could impact accessibility of care for patients across the country, and mean longer waits and fewer options," said Niki Showe, senior vice president of physician services for Summit Health in Franklin County, Pa.

Sacramento Bee‎ - DECEMBER 20, 2016 2:00 PM (California, USA)

Within individual states, the rural doctor shortage is especially pronounced. California, for example, has 86 primary care physicians per 100,000 residents in the mainly urban San Francisco Bay Area – but just 48 per 100,000 in the largely rural San Joaquin Valley and 43 per 100,000 in the Inland Empire east of Los Angeles.

Doctor shortage puts pressure on out-of-hours service
The Ulster Herald‎ - 7:24 pm December 29, 2016 (UK)

A QUARTER of doctor shifts are unfilled in the out-of-hours centres in the Western Trust area, which is also facing the added pressure of seasonal colds and flu epidemics.
In a statement, Western Urgent Care which delivers the out-of-hours service said they were “experiencing significant staffing pressures”. The service was fielding a staggering 200 telephone calls per hour on Boxing Day.
“Currently, 25 per-cent of our shifts remain unfilled every week, this puts significant extra pressure on our clinical as well as non-clinical staff which may result in delays in getting back to you or seeing you either in base or at home.
