North Dakota is in the midst of a physician shortage. Current projections from the 2015 UND Biennial Report include a shortage of 260-360 physicians by 2025. Physician shortages lead to longer waiting periods, decreased health care access and overall lower-quality healthcare. North Dakotans already wait weeks, if not months, to see a doctor, what will the future hold if there is an even greater shortage?

When Chris Minello, D.O., finished his residency in internal medicine, he considered establishing a practice in Philadelphia.
The Clarks Summit native had attended medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and knew he would likely earn more money if he chose a large metropolitan area.
After spending three years in medical residency at the Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education, Dr. Minello, 32, said he was convinced staying in Northeast Pennsylvania was the right decision.

Mississippi's doctor shortage puts the state dead last in the national rankings. It's an issue the University of Mississippi Medical Center is confronting, but as MPB's Desare Frazier reports, there's no quick fix.
Dr. LouAnn Woodward, dean of the school of medicine, says the state ranks 50th for number of doctors per person and it will take time to improve that outlook--one answer she says, increase class size.
