America is in the midst of full implementation of the federal Affordable Care Act. Among the objectives of that legislation was to expand access to health care for more people. In Michigan, and in many other states, that objective is hampered by a current and looming shortage of primary care physicians.

While an impending doctor shortage has been a topic of discussion in years past, a study by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) released in March projected a shortage of as many as 90,000 physicians in the next 10 years. The greatest demand, the report said, will be among surgeons, especially as increasingly older baby boomers clamor to mitigate chronic illness.

But this summer, the highly regarded Citizens’ Research Council of Michigan completed an extensive study of primary care in the state – and found another reason as well. There does in fact seem to be an overall shortage of primary care doctors, one that may increase dramatically by 2030, as the population ages, grows, and more people are covered under the Affordable Care Act.
