It is hoped the trial, which got underway in April, will help tackle the Hunter Valley's chronic shortage of GPs, especially in the bush. The pilot is being run by the University of Newcastle and the National Rural Faculty, with more 13 medical students currently taking part.
5th-year Newcastle medical student James Pearlman said GPs are essentially experts across all fields of medicine.
"And especially when working in a rural area, these GPs do absolutely everything and they're quite spectacular," he said.

Pinawa Mayor Blair Skinner said the doctor shortage has become his highest priority.
